Most common pests in our area:
- Mice
We have many species of mice in our area, the common house mouse, and field mouse are the best known, both are nocturnal but can be seen in daylight hours if food is scarce. Mice vary in size but in general 7/10cm in length with the tail the same size, weight 12/30g. They are active all year round, very inquisitive Mice can live in our homes and businesses for up to 3 years.
Life Cycle and Diet
Female mice can have 5 to 10 litters per year, with average litter size 6/8…in turn the young reach sexual maturity at 6 weeks so the population can increase and get out of control very quickly. Mice are omnivorous and primarily will feed on plant matter cereals and seeds, they utilizes moisture in foods so are not as dependent on water as Rats.
Habitat
Mice are good climbers but are often ground living, they are very adaptable to homes and indoor buildings, the nest is always within 30ft of the home range, they tend to be found in attics basements, wall cavities and under clutter.
Signs of intrusion
Frequent scratching noises known as gnawing, often on electrical and phone wires, or woods, damage can be huge and safety issues can arise, Mice produce 60/80 droppings per night, they are easily identified scattered around cupboards, under sinks, and hot presses. Mice frequently urinate and leave a strong ammonia like smell.
Prevention
By denying mice to a food source and shelter in and around our homes and businesses we can get on with life free from stress and the health and damage risks that are associated with intrusion. Tidy home and office less clutter less hiding places. Food stuff should always be stored away and covered, bins outside premises and covered. Mice have a soft skeleton so can squeeze through a hole the width of a pen, fill up all holes and entry points to your premises.
Risks
Once indoors mice can be hard to control, they contaminate foods with pathogens in there faeces and urine. they can cause fire risks from gnawing on electrical wires. Commercial businesses can suffer reputation issues, staff morale issues and revenue loss.
- Rats
Rats the most successful mammal on the planet alongside Humans.
In Galway we have two Rat species Brown Rat (Rattus Norvegicus) and the Black Rat (Rattus Rattus), the Brown Rat is the more common it is also known as the street rat and sewer rat, Both species are nocturnal by nature, but can be active and sighted during daylight hours.
Measuring up to 40cm in length the brown rats tail is shorter than the head and body 28cm, weighing up to 500g they can live undisturbed on our streets in our sewers and more worrying within our homes, properties and businesses for up to 3 years.
Life Cycle and Diet
They generally have 3/6 litters per year producing up to 14 pups per litter, and they in turn reach sexual maturity approx 5 weeks. So if you put all that together under ideal conditions the population can grow from 2 to 15,000 in just one year. The brown rat is omnivore but will eat almost anything, cereals are preferred eating 50g of food per day and water is a requisite needing 60ml per day to survive.
Habitat
Black Rats are more inclined to climb, but all tats are well adapt to climbing, the Brown Rat prefers ground living and burrowing close to a food source and water. They are very adaptive and can be found living in attics, basements, wall cavities sewers overgrown gardens also turf and wood piles.
Signs Of Intrusion
Rats produce approx 40/50 droppings per night, the size of a grain of rice, droppings are darkish brown in colour and tapered at both ends, they tend to leave droppings in the same area, unlike mice where droppings are found almost everywhere and are smaller in size. Grinding and scratching noises are usually a sign of intrusion, they will chew on wires woods etc as a way of keeping their teeth in good healthy condition.
Prevention
By denying rats access to food sources water and shelter in and around our homes and businesses we can get on with our lives free from the stress, health and damage risks that come with a pest intrusion. A tidy home (less clutter less hiding places) external and internal, rubbish and bins always securely covered and outside home. Cut down overgrown garden areas, check your home for entry points pipes etc 0.5″ inch gap is enough space for rats to enter our homes.
Risks
Rats carry many nasty diseases, these are usually passed on by contact with rats urine, Weils disease, Salmonella and Toxoplasma examples of health risks, but for commercial business owners there is also your business reputation, staff morale, and revenue loss,
- bedbugs
These small blood-sucking insects are becoming a serious issue in Ireland, whilst they don’t carry or transmit any diseases most of us would prefer they stay out of our homes and businesses. They travel very well often hitching a lift on your suitcase or clothes and entering our homes and businesses unknown to us.
When travelling check your bed linen and mattresses for live bugs, also dark blood spots, hang clothes in wardrobes and never leave suitcases on the beds. Most people only realize they have a bedbug issue when they wake up with small itchy bite marks, Bedbugs are masters at hiding, often in cracks and crevices in the bedroom, they can travel from room to room through the smallest of holes and electrical sockets, and can spread quickly and overrun a home, hostel, or hotel in no time. So Bauman Pest Control Ltd follows the old bed time saying don’t let the bedbugs bite! We specialize in bedbug treatments with both steam and chemical techniques, also we can supply insect monitors discreetly in rooms so as to identify problems early avoiding spreading the issue throughout our home or business.
- flies
Environmental matters and lifestyle habits have a huge effect on fly activity in our homes and businesses. Summer season in particular can see huge numbers of various species of flies infiltrate our living and working areas and they can become quite a nuisance.Flies spread diseases and nasty bacteria most commonly salmonella and e.coli by infecting our food and drinks when they land and feed. The most common we find in London are the house fly, fruit fly, drain flies, bluebottle and greenbottle flies and cluster flies.
We can protect ourselves by a few simple steps around the house or office,
Food should always be covered and put away, food surfaces and prep areas cleaned after every use.
All your bins should have lids, keep them tidy with no overflow and emptied regularly.
Check Drains around the home, making sure there are no blockages or standing water a major attractant to flies.
Commercial sites often use insect screens and Fly units also seasonal spray treatments all available from Bauman Pest Control Ltd.
- cockroaches
Cockroaches are an extremely distasteful variety of pest. The are often found in the home and are problematic to businesses. Especially in the catering sector because they carry diseases such as salmonella, typhoid and dysentery. Infestations have also been linked to skin disorders such as eczema and asthma. The most vulnerable to infection are children and the elderly. They like places that contain food, warmth and water. They will find most places in London suitable. Although infestations may begin in areas that have poor levels of hygiene. They will travel to find other suitable premises that possess ideal situations for them to feed and breed.
Leave it down to a fully qualified professional pest controller to survey your premises to find out the extent and root cause of the infestation. Using "Do It Yourself" home kits and trying it yourself never seems to do the trick as untrained individuals use below par tools and insecticides and do not treat at the source, and with the ferocious breeding rates it means they can soon get nest levels back up again very quickly.
We offer various treatment packages for our customers. We recommend an inspection and treatment in your home with the highest strength insecticidal gel on the market with the follow visit to give you that guarantee that the infestation is completely gone. For businesses we can offer the same but with a longer term monitoring plan also put in place. We also offer a residual spray as per assessment by our technician.
- squirrels
Deliberately introduced to this country sometime in the 19th century the grey squirrel has since spread throughout most of mainland England and Wales. Mainly a resident of broadleaved and mixed woodlands it is also a common resident of urban parks and gardens. They frequently enter domestic roof spaces. Once inside they chew woodwork, strip insulation from electrical wiring and water pipes, tear up fibreglass insulation and, occasionally, drown in water tanks.
Bauman Pest Control Ltd usually carries out 2 or 3 visits to catch all squirrels livin in the affected area as per technician discretion, also if possible gaps and entry holes are blocked with wire mesh on the end of the treatment. Various types of trap are available as is a poison based on warfarin, but only to professional technicians. Release of grey squirrels caught in cage traps is illegal.
- wasps/hornets/bees
Wasp nests are dangerous to treat and should always be managed by a trained wasp control professional. At any given time there could be thousands of wasps in a nest, and any attempts to remove or treat it may result in the wasps feeling threatened, increasing the likelihood of being stung as they defend their home.
At Bauman Pest Control Ltd our trained technician has over 10 years experience in wasp, bee and hornet control and will identify and eliminate wasp nests quickly and efficiently. We have a 100% success rate, can offer guarantees, and are Local Authority approved.
- fleas
Small (2mm) wingless insects, flattened side to side, red-brown with backwardly directed spines and legs designed for jumping. All adult fleas are parasitic on warm-blooded animals. Larval stages live in the nest of the host and feed on skin, feathers and, most importantly, the blood-rich faeces of the adult flea. When fully grown the larvae spin well camouflaged silken cocoons. When fully developed the adult waits within this until it detects the vibrations caused by a potential host. Only then does it emerge.
The complete lifecycle takes about a month in the summer. Adult fleas feed on blood. Their bites can cause intense irritation around the central bright red spot. Different people react differently to a bite, both in terms of degree of reaction and time taken to react.
The Cat Flea is by far the commonest species of flea and readily bites humans.Fleas are blood-sucking parasites and can live up to one year. A female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day. It is estimated that 95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in the environment - not on your pet, i.e. on beds, rugs, carpets and sofas. They can jump the equivalent of a person jumping a London bus. Fleas can cause nasty allergic reactions on your pets.
As a remedy always treat infested pets with a special veterinary aerosol, powder, shampoo or medication. Burn infested bedding and spray, or dust, a suitably labelled insecticide into all cracks and crevices in walls and floors. Remove any old birds’ nests you find lurking in the eaves or the loft. Since most of the flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in your carpet and furnishings, use a trained pest control professional, with flea treatment experience.
- ants
The commonest species that invades houses is the Black Garden Ant, which is actually very dark brown. All ants have the main divisions of the body (head, thorax, abdomen) distinctly separated by very narrow waists and have a sharp elbow joint in their antennae. They are highly organised social insects. It is the foraging worker ants that invade buildings in search of food. These are from 3 to 5mm in length and are attracted to sweet foodstuffs which they take back to the nest to feed to the larvae and queen.
The so-called ants eggs sold for aquaria fish are actually the pupae. Flying ants are the reproductive males and females. These mating ants are winged and have a nuptial swarming flight during only a few days in July or August. Mating takes place in the air and the female then seeks out a nest site where she stays for the winter, laying eggs the following spring in order to start up a new colony.
Our technician usually carries out a residual spray treatment or gel treatment after assesment of the premises.
The second most common species of ants id the Pharaoh's Ant. A small tropical species of ant of increasing importance in the structures of large centrally heated buildings, especially hospitals and high rise blocks of flats where it can be a serious public health pest. Pharoah's Ants are particularly difficult to control and eradicate due to their ability to split the colony and spread over an area. Successful control only by baiting techniques, not by residual treatments.
